"Statistics for Evidence-based Decisions in the New Era"
27 Sep 2019 - 10:00
CIDRI-Africa PASS staff member Olina Ngwenya attended the joint SUSAN SSACAB (Conference of the Sub-Saharan Network (SUSAN) of the International Biometrics Society (IBS) and DELTAS Africa Sub-Saharan Africa Consortium for Advanced Biostatistics (SSACAB)) 2019 conference from 8th–11th of September in Cape Town. The 2019 conference theme was "Statistics for Evidence-based Decisions in the New Era".
"It was a great opportunity to mingle and learn from fellow biostatisticians. The message which stood out for me was on subgroup analyses in trials. Such type of analyses are prone to false negatives due to insufficient statistical power, and should be considered exploratory.", said Olina.
Sir Richard Peto's (Oxford University) comment "Only one thing is worse than doing subgroup analyses --- believing the results" particularly, will stay with her.
Olina thanked CIDRI-Africa for the PASS award which enabled her to attend the conference. She is pictured below with fellow former Hasselt Universiteit Masters in Biostatistics graduates who enjoyed the opportunity to meet again at the conference.
